These notes are for Windows 7 & Jaws. I'm only going to be talking about a particular message, & why it doesn't get read by Jaws, not discussing various methods of ejecting / removing various types of drives.

Let me try explaining this another way. Whether you eject drives using the, Eject, option from the context menu, file menu, or the Safe To Remove Hardware icon from the system tray, no matter which option you use, you will get a Jaws dialog telling you, for example,

Safe To Remove Hardware: The CORSAIR32 (E:) device can now be safely removed from the computer, Removeable Disk E

But, if you don't get a message similar to the one above when ejecting / removing an external drive or flashdrive using any of the eject or safely remove hardware options, this is due to an icon setting in Taskbar properties. The icon below is the culprit.

Windows host process (Rundll32) Combo box

If the icon above is set to, Hide Icon In Notifications, then Jaws will not read the,

Safe To Remove Hardware: The CORSAIR32 (E:) device can now be safely removed from the computer, Removeable Disk E

or similar message when ejecting / removing drives. Remember, I'm only talking about this particular message, & why it doesn't get read by Jaws, not discussing various methods of ejecting / removing various types of drives.

Now, if Jaws does not announce the message I'm talking about this is what I did to fix the problem when all my other settings were correct.
1. I open Taskbar properties this way. Press, Windows key, to open the Start menu, press, Escape, to highlight the, Start button, press, Alt + Enter, to open Taskbar & Start Menu properties.

2. When opened you are on, Taskbar properties, so tab several times, to Notification Area Customize... button, & press the spacebar to open. Wait a couple of seconds for the icon list to populate.

3. Tab to, Windows host process (Rundll32) Combo box, arrow up / down to either, Show Icon In Notifications, or Only Show Notifications. Either 1 of these 2 settings will allow Jaws to read the safe to remove notification

4. Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, again tab to, Okay, & press enter to save & close.
