outSPOKEN FOR WINDOWS
COMMAND LISTS



This appendix contains two complete listings of the outSPOKEN commands. The 
first list is organized alphabetically, and the second list is arranged by 
key. All outSPOKEN commands, unless otherwise stated, are located on the 
numeric keypad. The modifiers SHIFT and CTRL are located on the main 
keyboard.




Alphabetical Listing

BOTTOM: KPD 3   

Located on this key are the commands BOTTOM OF WINDOW and READ REST OF 
WINDOW (CTRL).

BOTTOM EDGE: CTRL-KPD 2

The pointer is moved to the bottom edge of the current window without 
changing its horizontal position.

BOTTOM OF WINDOW: KPD 3

The pointer is moved to the bottom right corner of the current window.

CONTROL MENU - CHILD WINDOW: CTRL-KPD 7

The pointer is placed on the Control menu of the current child window.

CONTROL MENU - PARENT WINDOW: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 7

The pointer is placed on the Control menu of the current parent window.

DOWN: KPD 2   

Located on this key are the commands NEXT LINE, BOTTOM EDGE (CTRL), and 
POINTER DOWN (CTRL-SHIFT).

DRAG: KPD 9   

Located on this key is the command MOUSE BUTTON DOWN/UP.

FIND: KPD 1

Located on this key are the commands FIND TEXT/GRAPHIC, FIND CARET 
(SHIFT), and FIND HIGHLIGHT (CTRL).

FIND CARET: SHIFT-1

The pointer is moved to the text insertion point. If there is no caret, 
the pointer is not moved.

FIND HIGHLIGHT: CTRL-KPD 1

The pointer is moved to the next occurrence of highlighted text in the 
current window, and the highlighted text is spoken.

FIND TEXT/GRAPHIC: KPD 1

Finds a text string, attribute, or graphic within the current window. 
Press FIND, followed by a text string, followed by ENTER to search the 
entire window for that string. If FIND and ENTER are pressed, and no text 
is entered, outSPOKEN searches for the string that was last entered. When 
an item is found, the pointer is placed on that item, and it is spoken.

FONT/GRAPHIC INFO: KPD PERIOD

Reports font and style information of the text or graphic under the 
pointer. Also speaks current character name.

INFO: KPD PERIOD

Located on this key are the commands FONT/GRAPHIC INFO, WHERE IN WINDOW 
(CTRL), and WHERE ON SCREEN (CTRL-SHIFT).

LEFT: KPD 4

Located on this key are the commands PREVIOUS WORD, PREVIOUS CHARACTER 
(SHIFT), LEFT EDGE (CTRL), and POINTER LEFT (CTRL-SHIFT).

LEFT EDGE: CTRL-KPD 4

The pointer is moved to the left edge of the current window without 
changing its vertical position.

MENU BAR: SHIFT-KPD 7

The pointer is placed on the first item in the active menu bar.

MOUSE BUTTON DOWN/UP: KPD 9

The mouse button is held down and the pointer can then be moved, to drag 
items or to highlight text. Toggles on and off.

MOUSE CLICK: KPD 5

The mouse button is clicked. This is for placing the caret at the current 
pointer location in editable text, highlighting items, pressing buttons, 
checking check boxes, bringing up menus, and any other actions which are 
normally performed by clicking the mouse button.

NEXT CHARACTER: SHIFT-KPD 6

The pointer is moved to the end of the next character and that character 
is read. If the next item is a graphic, the pointer is placed on the 
graphic and its name is spoken.

NEXT LINE: KPD 2

The pointer is moved to the end of the next line and the text is read. If 
the pointer is not already at the end of a line, the pointer is moved to 
the end of the current line and the intervening text is read.

NEXT WORD: KPD 6

The pointer is moved to the end of the next word or graphic and that word 
or graphic is read. If the pointer is not already at the end of a word, 
it is moved to the end of the current word and that word is spoken. If 
the next word is a graphic, the pointer is placed on that graphic and its 
name is spoken.

outSPOKEN: KPD PLUS

Located on this key are the commands outSPOKEN PREFERENCES DIALOG (SHIFT), 
RENAME GRAPHIC DIALOG (CTRL), and VOICE RATE FASTER (CTRL-SHIFT).

outSPOKEN OFF: CTRL-SHIFT-O

[Note: This is the letter O, typed from the main keyboard. This is the 
only outSPOKEN command not issued from the numeric keypad.]

Turns outSPOKEN off.

outSPOKEN PREFERENCES DIALOG: SHIFT-KPD PLUS

Brings up the dialog for changing outSPOKEN's settings.

POINTER DOWN: SHIFT-CTRL-KPD 2

The pointer is moved down by seven pixels without changing its horizontal 
position.

POINTER LEFT: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 4

The pointer is moved left by seven pixels without changing its vertical 
position.

POINTER RIGHT: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 6

The pointer is moved right by seven pixels without changing its vertical 
position.

POINTER UP: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 8

The pointer is moved up by seven pixels without changing its horizontal 
location.

PREVIOUS CHARACTER: SHIFT-KPD 4

The pointer is moved to the beginning of the previous character and that 
character is read. If the previous character is a graphic, the pointer is 
placed on that graphic and the graphic's name is spoken.

PREVIOUS LINE: KPD 8

The pointer is moved to the beginning of the previous line and it is 
read. If the pointer is not already at the beginning of a line, the 
pointer is moved to the beginning of the current line and the intervening 
text is read.

PREVIOUS WORD: KPD 4

The pointer is moved to the beginning of the previous word or graphic and 
that word or graphic is read. If the pointer is not already at the 
beginning of a word, the pointer is moved to the beginning of the current 
word and it is spoken. If the pointer is moved to a graphic, the name of 
the graphic is spoken and the pointer is placed on that graphic.

READ: KPD 0   

Located on this key are the commands READ LINE, READ WORD (SHIFT), SPELL 
WORD (CTRL), and SPELL MILITARY (CTRL-SHIFT).

READ LINE: KPD 0

The current line is read without moving the pointer.

READ REST OF WINDOW: CTRL-KPD 3

The current window is read from the pointer location to the bottom of the 
window. This command moves the pointer to the bottom of the current 
window. 

READ WORD: SHIFT-KPD 0

The current word is read without moving the pointer. 

RENAME GRAPHIC DIALOG: CTRL-KPD PLUS

If the pointer is on a graphic, a dialog for changing that graphic's name 
appears.

RIGHT: KPD 6

Located on this key are the commands NEXT WORD, NEXT CHARACTER (SHIFT), 
RIGHT EDGE (CTRL), and POINTER RIGHT (CTRL-SHIFT).

RIGHT EDGE: CTRL-KPD 6

The pointer is moved to the right edge of the current window without 
changing its vertical position.

SAY-ON: CTRL-KPD ENTER

All text that gets written to the screen is spoken as it is drawn. This 
feature is useful with terminal emulators and other command-line 
interfaces. Toggles on and off.

SELECT: KPD 5

Located on this key is the command MOUSE CLICK.

SILENCE SPEECH: KPD ENTER

Speech is silenced until any other key is pressed.

SPELL MILITARY: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 0

The current word is spelled with military phonetics (e.g., the word "cab" 
would be read as "Charlie, Alpha, Bravo").

SPELL WORD: CTRL-KPD 0

The current word is spelled without moving the pointer.

STOP: KPD ENTER

Located on this key are the commands SILENCE SPEECH, SAY-ON (CTRL), and 
VOICE RATE SLOWER (CTRL-SHIFT).

TOP: KPD 7

Located on this key are the commands TOP OF WINDOW, MENU BAR (SHIFT), 
CONTROL MENU - CHILD WINDOW (CTRL), and CONTROL MENU - PARENT WINDOW 
(CTRL-SHIFT).

TOP EDGE: CTRL-KPD 8

The pointer is moved to the top edge of the current window without 
changing its horizontal location.

TOP OF WINDOW: KPD 7

The pointer is moved to the top left corner of the current window, below 
the menu bar.

TOP WINDOW: KPD SLASH

The pointer is moved to the top of the active window.

UP: KPD 8

Located on this key are the commands PREVIOUS LINE, TOP EDGE (CTRL), and 
POINTER UP (CTRL-SHIFT).

VOICE RATE FASTER: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD PLUS

The baseline voice rate is increased by one.

VOICE RATE SLOWER: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD ENTER

The baseline voice rate is decreased by one.

WHERE IN WINDOW: CTRL-KPD PERIOD

outSPOKEN reports the pointer position within the current window with 
respect to the upper left corner. Location is given as "percent over by 
percent down."

WHERE ON SCREEN: CTRL-SHIFT-KPD PERIOD

outSPOKEN reports the pointer position on the entire screen with respect 
to the upper left corner. Location is given as "percent over by percent 
down."

WINDOW: KPD SLASH

Located on this key are the commands TOP WINDOW, WINDOW MENU (SHIFT), and 
WINDOW NAME (CTRL).

WINDOW MENU: SHIFT-KPD SLASH

Brings up a window menu for use in switching between visible windows. 
Clicking on a window title in the menu places the pointer in that window, 
and a subsequent click in that window activates it.

WINDOW NAME: CTRL-KPD SLASH

The current window name is spoken.

Key Listing

In the following list, keys will be identified in parentheses by column 
and row (C# R#), and listed by numeric keypad name (e.g., 0, 1, 2,  9, 
ASTERISK, SLASH, ENTER, etc.).

[Note: This is the letter O, typed from the main keyboard. This is the

KPD 0: READ (C1-2 R5)

KPD 0   READ LINE

The current line is read without moving the pointer.

SHIFT-KPD 0   READ WORD

The current word is read without moving the pointer. 

CTRL-KPD 0   SPELL WORD

The current word is spelled without moving the pointer.

CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 0   SPELL MILITARY

The current word is spelled with military phonetics (e.g., the word "cab" 
would be read as "Charlie, Alpha, Bravo").

KPD 1: FIND (C1 R4)

KPD 1   FIND TEXT/GRAPHIC

The pointer is moved to the bottom edge of the current window without 
changing its horizontal position.

SHIFT-CTRL-KPD 2   POINTER DOWN

The pointer is moved down by seven pixels without changing its horizontal 
position.

KPD 3: BOTTOM (C3 R4) 

KPD 3   BOTTOM OF WINDOW

The pointer is moved to the bottom right corner of the current window.

CTRL-KPD 3   READ REST OF WINDOW

The current window is read from the pointer location to the bottom of the 
window. This command moves the pointer to the bottom of the current 
window.

KPD 4: LEFT (C1 R3) 

KPD 4   PREVIOUS WORD

The pointer is moved to the beginning of the previous word or graphic and 
that word or graphic is read. If the pointer is not already at the 
beginning of a word, the pointer is moved to the beginning of the current 
word and it is spoken. If the pointer is moved to a graphic, the name of 
the graphic is spoken and the pointer is placed on that graphic.

SHIFT-KPD 4   PREVIOUS CHARACTER

The pointer is moved to the beginning of the previous character and that 
character is read. If the previous character is a graphic, the pointer is 
placed on that graphic and the graphic's name is spoken.

CTRL-KPD 4   LEFT EDGE

The pointer is moved to the left edge of the current window without 
changing its vertical position.

CTRL-SHIFT-KPD 4   POINTER LEFT

The pointer is moved left by seven pixels without changing its vertical 
position.

KPD 5: SELECT (C2 R3) 

KPD 5   MOUSE CLICK

The mouse button is clicked. This is for placing the caret at the current 
pointer location in editable text, highlighting items, pressing buttons,

KPD 7: TOP (C1 R2)
