A. Introduction

This disk includes an SSIL driver file for your Keynote GOLD
synthesizer. The SSIL driver allows you to use your synthesizer with
any application that uses SSIL. Applications which use SSIL include
Arkenstone's "An Open Book", and several Windows(tm) screen readers
such as "Screen Power", and "Jaws for Windows".

You do not need to run the install on this disk in order to use your
Keynote GOLD synthesizer with an SSIL application, just follow the
installation instructions for your application. More information is
given in section D below.

B. List of Files

The following files should be in a KEYNOTE directory on this disk.
* KEYNOTE.DLL The Keynote GOLD SSIL driver
* KEYNOTE.INI The Keynote SSIL control file. This file
specifies the default language used by the SSIL
                    driver.
*   READ.ME         This help file.
* AGENTS.TXT Addresses for Keynote GOLD agents world wide.

C. Supported synthesizers

This SSIL driver, KEYNOTE.DLL, supports all current models of Keynote
Gold synthesizer. These include the Keynote Gold PC, a version for
the IBM PC ISA bus; the Keynote GOLD SA, a stand alone battery
powered portable synthesizer; and the Keynote GOLD VoiceCard, a
PCMCIA (PC Card) synthesizer for portable computers and laptops
equipped with PCMCIA card slots.

You may order any Keynote GOLD synthesizer with a variety of
international languages built in. The languages currently available
are English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Dutch. This SSIL
driver supports all multilingual Keynote Gold synthesizers.

D. Installation

To use this SSIL driver, follow the instructions that came with your
application. If the application asks you for the name of the access
device driver, select KEYNOTE. If you need to browse the driver disk
for the driver file, then look in the KEYNOTE subdirectory for the
file KEYNOTE.DLL.

E. Changing the default language

You can specify a default language for your SSIL application that is
different to the synthesizer default language. The control file
KEYNOTE.INI selects the default language for SSIL to use.
To set the default language, enter a line in KEYNOTE.INI as follows

     Default language = English

To use another language, change "English" to either French, German,
Spanish, Dutch, or Italian. You may also use the short forms eng,
frn, grm, spn, itl, or dut.

Save the file KEYNOTE.INI in the same directory as KEYNOTE.DLL. An
example KEYNOTE.INI is included on the Keynote SSIL driver disk.

F. Installing An Open Book with a Keynote Gold synthesizer

Versions 2.11 and earlier of "An Open Book" support the Keynote Gold
PC and SA synthesizers without using a Keynote SSIL driver. However
we recommend that you do use the Keynote Gold SSIL driver, because
this works with all models of Keynote Gold synthesizer (PC, SA, and
VoiceCard) and takes full advantage of the features of the
synthesizers.

When these versions of "An Open Book" ask you to specify the access
device, do not choose option 3 "Keynote Gold SA or PC", but choose
option 4 "Other" and enter KEYNOTE for the access device type. "An
Open Book" will then use KEYNOTE.DLL and the all models and features
of the Keynote GOLD synthesizers will be available to you.
