What Is VE Help?

VE Help provides a quick and easy way to read through the
documentation files supplied with the Vocal-eyes Dos screen
reader. It presents you with a menu of titles instead of file
names to choose from. Simply use the arrow keys to move to the
title your interested in and press ENTER to hear that section
read to you. Optionally, you can specify your own file browser to
use with the program as well. This version of VE Help will only
work with Vocal-eyes 3.0. The version designed to work with
earlier versions is contained in a file called VEHELP2.ZIP located
in library 5 of the disabilities forum on CompuServe. Uploaded
by the author.

Installing VE Help

To install VE Help, copy the files VEHELP.EXE and SEE.EXE to
the directory in which the manual text files are located in. This
directory is typically \SPEECH\MANUAL unless you have changed it
to something else. For example, if these two files are located on
your floppy drive (A:), and you wanted to copy the files to your
hard drive (C:) to your Vocal-eyes directory, you would type the
following at the Dos prompt:

COPY A:\VEHELP.EXE C:\SPEECH\MANUAL <enter>
COPY A:\SEE.EXE C:\SPEECH\MANUAL <enter>

Running VE Help

To run VE Help, type "VEHELP" <enter> at the Dos prompt. A
menu should appear listing the various topics of the manual. Use
the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to the topic your
interested in and press enter. The appropriate file will then be
loaded and displayed on the screen. While viewing the file, you
can use Page Down to display the next screen, Page Up to go back to
the previous screen, HOME to jump to the top of the file, or ESCAPE
to stop viewing. After you are done reading through the file,
pressing ESCAPE will take you back to the topics menu.

There are two sub menus off of the main menu. These are the
"Sections 11 through 20: Sub Menu" and the "Appendices Sub Menu".
Pressing ENTER on either of these choices will bring up the
respective menu. These sub menus are identical to the first menu
and work exactly in the same way. Use the arrow keys just as you
did before to view any of the topics, or select the final choice on
the sub menus, to return to the main menu. Pressing the letter Q
or selecting the last choice on the main menu, "Quit VE Help",
while in the menu will terminate the program.

If you have a favorite file browser that you normally use to
view text files, you may use this browser with the program instead
of the one that is supplied with VE Help. By default, VE Help uses
a file browser called "See" to read and display the manual text
files. However, by specifying an alternative browser on the
command line, you can have VE Help use that browser instead.
Suppose you use the file browser "Read it" on a regular basis and
are comfortable with using it. Well, assuming you have "Read it"
in one of the pathed directories i.e. one that is listed in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, type the following at the Dos prompt to invoke
VE Help

VEHELP /READIT

Now, every time VE Help goes to read one of the text files, it will
load "Read it" to read the file instead of "See". You can specify
any file browser, text editor, word processor, or anything else
that is able to load and display a text file, on the command line.
