On your disk containing the programs "SEND" and "RCV" there is a file
called "SEND-RCV.TXT". This file contains information about using each of
these programs. If you are an experienced computer user the information
contained there should be enough for you.

If your experience with computers is extremely limited, the following
additional start-up notes may be of help.

Before doing anything else, connect the Scholar to one of your PC's
serial ports with the supplied serial cable. If your computer doesn't
use the nine pin serial ports, you will have to purchase an 25 to 9 pin
adapter. Radio Shack provides such an adapter for less than $15.

Next, you should place the send and rcv programs in your path. The path
is a list of folders that the operating system looks in to find
programs. One easy way to put these programs into your path is to copy
them into your DOS folder. This will usually be c:\dos on older systems
or c:\windows\command on systems running Windows.

Insert the disk with the programs "SEND", "RCV" and "DUMBTERM" in your A
drive. With your computer turned on, once you are at your "C>" prompt,
type "copy A:*.* C:\dos" and press enter. This will install the programs
in your DOS directory making them available to you wherever you may be
while working with your computer. (Do not type the quotation marks, just
the characters enclosed within them.)

When sending or receiving files between a computer and a Braille 'n Speak
or other device, the computer is the focal point. If you want to transfer
data from the Braille 'n Speak to the computer, be sure you are in the
Braille 'n Speak file you want to send. Then, using the keyboard of the
computer, write "RCV (filename)" and any special command instructions as
described in the "send-rcv.txt" file on the disk. After the file has been
transmitted completely, indicated by the Braille 'n Speak speaking the word
"ok", press Escape on the computer to exit Rcv.

To send a file stored on disk to the Braille 'n Speak, Connect the two
instruments. Determine the size of the file to be sent to the Braille 'n
Speak. Within the Braille 'n Speak, create a file with enough room to hold
the data you plan to send. To do this, consult the directory (catalog) of
the disk containing the information to be sent to the computer. The
directory will show the number of BYTES in the file to be sent. A Braille
'n Speak "page" will hold 4,096 bytes. So, divide the number of bytes
found in the disk directory by 4,096. If the result is less than 1,
reserve one Braille 'n Speak page. Your result almost always will result
in a decimal fraction. Always round your working answer up to the next
whole number of pages. If your result is 2.016, reserve three Braille 'n
Speak pages. Having taken these steps now you are ready to send or receive
information.

To send data from the computer to the Braille 'n Speak or other device, on
the computer keyboard type "send (filename)" and press the enter key". If
necessary, be sure to include drive indicators after the "send" or "rcv"
commands.

If you have a file in your Braille 'n Speak and you want to send it to a
disk which will be in drive A of your computer, the computer will be
receiving the information. Suppose you want to call the information
"history". To cause the computer to capture it, on the computer keyboard
you should write: "rcv (space) a:history (enter)". Do not type the words
"space" and "enter". Then, transmit the file from your external device
using its appropriate transmit command.

DUMBTERM

Dumbterm is a program which enables a sighted person to see on the computer
screen that which is being spoken by a Braille 'n Speak or other device.
When Dumbterm is in operation, if you write "o-chord t" on the Braille 'n
Speak, the computer will show "Option the time is" (and the time).

If you have installed Dumbterm by copying the disk as mentioned above, to
use it you can type "dumbterm" at your c> prompt.

To use Dumbterm to see what the Braille 'n Speak is saying, connect the
computer as described above. Then, turn on the serial port of the Braille
'n Speak. To do this, enter the status menu with dots 3-4-chord (f10 on
the Type 'n Speak) and write the letters "f" and "y". Set the Braille 'n
Speak to "REMOTE". Do this by writing dots 3-5-6-chord on the Braille 'n
Speak keyboard. You will hear "remote" spoken by the speech synthesizer.
Next press the letter "a". You should hear "ASCII". If this does not work
with your Braille 'n Speak, press dot 4 instead of "a".

The Braille 'n Speak will stay in remote mode until you turn its power off.
Remember to turn off the serial port. Within the status menu "fn" will do
it.

When Dumbterm is engaged, whatever you write on the keyboard of the
computer will go to the Braille 'n Speak or other device. However,
Dumbterm will not capture information in the computer.

To exit Dumbterm, press Alt-X on the computer.
